The El Niño weather cycle is expected to bring drier and hotter conditions this summer. Here are our tips on preparing your home:
Water conservation: Install water-saving devices, such as low-flow showerheads and faucets, and fix any leaks. Consider rainwater harvesting or greywater recycling.
Landscaping: Plant drought-tolerant plants and trees, and reduce the amount of lawn area. Mulch around plants to help retain moisture.
Roof & gutter maintenance: Make sure your roof is in good condition and that your gutters are clear of debris to reduce the risk of fire.
Insulation: Insulate your home to help keep it cool in the summer. This can be done by adding insulation to the attic, walls, and floors.
Air conditioning: If you have air conditioning, make sure it is in good working order and that you have a backup plan in case of a power outage.
Emergency preparedness: Make sure you have an emergency plan in place in case of a power outage or fire. This should include a list of essential supplies, such as food, water, and first-aid kit.
